Zanzibar Kitesurfing Q&A

Zanzibar Kite Conditions

  • The east coast of Zanzibar, especially around Paje, is where you’ll find consistent winds and perfect kite conditions. Thanks to the trade winds, it's a dream spot for kite surfers!

  • The best months for kiting in Zanzibar are mid June to September and December to mid March. During these periods, the winds are steady, offering you the perfect setup for an unforgettable kiteboarding experience.

  • Zanzibar enjoys two main trade winds: the Kaskazi (from December to March, African Summer) and the Kuzi (from June to October, African Winter). These winds bring ideal conditions for kite surfers, no matter your level.

  • Zanzibar is famous for its flat lagoons and gentle waves, making it perfect for beginners and those looking to sharpen their skills. If you're chasing big waves, Zanzibar might not be the place, but it’s an amazing spot for smooth and relaxed kite sessions.

  • The tides in Zanzibar shift roughly every 6 hours and can make a big difference. At low tide, you'll find shallow, glassy lagoons, while high tide offers deeper water and more room for your kite sessions. Perfect for every type of ride: Perfect for every type of ride: kitesurfing, kite foiling, wave riding or wing foiling.

  • If you plan to travel with your own equipment, you should know that the wind is stronger in the season from June to October than in the other season, December to March. It depends on the perfect match between kite size, board size, body weight and wind speed, but if you had to choose between two kite sizes, you should take the following: For men; 15m and 12m (winter season), 17m and 15m (summer season)For women; 13m and 11m (winter season) and 12m and 9m (summer season).

  • We offer the latest kitesurfing equipment from the pioneering Hawaiian brand Cabrinha, which has led the industry in innovation, performance and safety for the last 20 years.

Kitesurf Lessons Zanzibar

  • As a total beginner, it's important to know that the average person needs at least 3 days to get on the board and ride a few meters. At the end of the 3rd day you won't be a pro, you won't be independent, you won't be able to rent equipment to practice on your own, but you will definitely be able to ride a few meters on your own with someone guiding you. You'll need more lessons after that until you're independent, but don't worry, anyone can do it. How long does it take to become independent? We don't know. Everyone has their own learning curve. To become independent, you need to know how to consistently ride into the wind, perform transitions flawlessly, retrieve your board in deeper water, get your kite back out of the water, launch and land your kite safely on the beach and how to self-rescue in an emergency. Perfecting all this takes time.
